Tuberculosis, a disease once thought to be under control, is spreading and mutating. It’s developing resistance to almost every drug available to treat it. In South Africa, fears of an epidemic have led some health authorities to lock up patients diagnosed with XDR-TB. Yet with little to offer these patients, some lose hope while others break out. Zelda Hansen is one such patient. She’s broken out of Jose Pearson Hospital before and she’s losing faith in her drug treatment, which causes her very unpleasant side-effects. How should countries balance their need to protect the public from a killer disease with the rights of the individual patients?
