Survival - A Healthy Start

← Back to film listing

Children are most likely to die in their first month of life. Across the world, infections, disease and poor nutrition cause millions of unnecessary deaths. Bangladesh has one of the highest child mortality figures in the world. Here, traditional beliefs discourage women from breast-feeding their new-born babies. Yet this first milk, called colostrum, contains vital nutrients and antibodies which help children build up their immunity. Even after these early days, life for young children is fraught with danger. Fifty children a day die drowning. Fifty thousand a year are killed by diarrhoea. Yet a range of cheap and simple interventions could save many of these precious lives.
