Soroti is a subsistence-farming region in eastern Uganda. Seventy-five per cent of the population are women and children, and there is high level of maternal mortality. A regional World Health Organisation, AFRO, is carrying out a unique experiment to reform the region's health care for pregnant women and newborn children. Everything, from family planning to emergency response is changing – with dramatic results.
